Tuning into the mid

I have learned the hard way that life is about seeking that balance. Like a string on the lute not too tight, not too slack. Living extreme for some time but knowing how to get back to your bat-cave regularly to rebalance, recalibrate (because even Batman had a bat-cave). One of these mids is your void. Your core. Your solar plexus. Place of endless energy and love. Place where you can connect and get in touch with the ultimate power of now. Place where statements like these are truly working: "That who is aware of fear, cant be fearful. That who is aware of anxiety, cant be anxious". I encourage all of us to search for our mid, our core in everything we do. It teaches us patience and focus. It teaches the way how we can magically slow down the time just by our mind. It is time to seek that mid in everything we do and this maybe a good encouragement to pause and ask yourself today, where is the mid I can tune in today?

Sense of gratitude after five years of hard work

After five years of hard work and good laughs, long days and countless travels, I have quit the company I have helped to built. It was a hell of a ride. We have grown the company from 20 people to 150 people in the development (DevTribes as we like to call it) and build four development offices in both Czech Republic and Belarus. We went through all possible and known failures such as:

Healing neural pathways through forgivness

You know the story. You have been hurt. Somebody stepped into your territory and break your toys. Sometimes stole those toys from you. That emotion has strengthen that neural pathway connected to this memory. It created pattern for the future. Your future is now defined by your past. There is a saying, show me your past and I will tell you your future. Unless you forgive those who created that emotional synapse firing in the past, you cant move forward in the future. Because even if you leave people who created this emotional injustice, there will be other people firing the same pattern over and over no matter where you will go. And the more energy you will give to this emotional injustice, the stronger those neural pathways will be in the future for whatever similar situation no matter where you will go. Fortunately we have been given great tool in our mind toolkit: forgiveness. By forgiveness we can heal our wounds, we can weaken those pathways that are damaging for our mind and body. It is time to identify those old and new grudges and time to forgive.

Just being without guilt

This is a message to all high achievers out there. All approval junkies, success seeking goal oriented work addicts. If your fuel is the desire to prove others wrong, it might be a time to reconsider your why. If you will drive through life in 280km’s an hour in that avatar you have been given, sooner or later something will break and you will totally reconsider your priorities. You have basically two options. Either continue and find out the hard way (through pain), or slow down and find out the smother way. That slowing down can start right now. Great thing about slowing down that you can begin immediately. First thing that is very hard to accept is, that you are complete already and no todolist once completed will ever make you fulfilled. Once you accept you are complete, you can start taming your eagerness to be something more. Something more what is defined by external factors rather than internal virtues. Start today just by sitting still for 5 minutes without feeling guilty. Forget about any goal of this stillness, any usefulness. Don’t search for any hidden meaning. Just tune in to yourself. Just be with yourself, without guilt. You deserve it after such a long journey.

Constant anticipation of change

Chronic pain can become the greatest and strongest teacher of all. It catches you many times unprepared, sometimes weak after a long hard day, sometimes in the middle of the night and it can easily grab your attention and bring all your dark daemons. Bring all the fears and self-pitty. If you let it, you can spend in this dark state hours getting both your pain and your mindset worse and worse by thinking all the negative things about your state. And how can we make this state even worse? When we anticipate that by doing X, Y or Z we will get better. That after I will take this treatment, or I will change my diet this way, or taking this pill or this exercise on regular basis I will get better. We undergo these anticipations and when results does not prove to be fruitful, it gives to our daemons superpowers and makes our thoughts even darker. Failure after failure you must learn to stop constantly anticipating a change. That does not mean losing hope, but it means that whatever you do, you literally must accept any state it will provide. Accept it and be fine with it. Will it worsen the situation? Good, you know this one is death end. Will it make it better only temporary? Good, maybe there is little clue. Nothing happens? Good, time to try something else. You literally must stop constant anticipation marathon for the sake of maintaining your sanity. By accepting any state you are in, you are not letting your daemons in. Start by observing what situations trigger the daemons to get in. Then with compassion accept any state you are in. If you are dealing with chronic pain, many times it will be unpleasant but there will come time when you will be fine again and those daemons will go away. Time can heal any wounds. It is not easy, but it is truly a Stoic practice we can all learn.

Multidisciplinary aspect of trading

One of my life fascination has been for the past ten years a craft of trading financial markets. Unlike other crafts, trading has one “disadvantage”. It is more art than science. As a trader you must deal with incomplete information and many unknowns that can ruin your trade. Your biggest enemy is yourself and your prehistoricOs. Learning to trade is multidisciplinary craft. One has to stay calm, when storm hits. One has to stay true to his merits and act with reason. One must seize the opportunity when the window of opportunity opens up just for a short moment. One must do the deliberate work, the deliberate practice. One must be well prepared. One must be patient to wait for the opportunities to come. Staying on the top of your game, on the of your craft and not get mad by all the stress is like tuning a lute. If you are too tight, you might miss a trade with good opportunity. If you are too relaxed, you might get too big in a not so favourable trade. Trading is about finding the right balance. Balance to be in control. Trading brings all the good and all the bad within you and mastering the craft is never ending journey. This journey brings me truly deep satisfaction mainly because of it’s multidisciplinary aspect. Aspects that might surprise some, aspects that teach me how to be good human being and better decision maker.

PrehistoricOS

There is a concept I like to use when talking about our ego. Rather than calling it ego itself (which in my opinion is multidimensional and sits on top of this concept) , I call it prehistoricOs. A set of drivers we have been given to get out of trees and caves and to fulfil our core primary instinct: to survive and reproduce. Our prehistoricOs served us well for millions of years but it is actually now over the last couple hundreds years is doing more damage then good. We are no longer part of tribes where one if hold different opinion is kicked out of the tribe and dies out of hunger and cold. If you don’t like your tribe, you can easily change it or create your own. Thanks to all the abstract concepts we have created we have now world for which we have not been designed. We can survive much more easily, without all necessary anxieties we are still feeling. All fears we feel has been primarily designed for us not to get eaten but last time I have checked, there were no tigers in the park or supermarket I walk by every day. By recognising this prehistoricOs drivers, we can start to recognise when and why these drivers are being triggered. By understanding that these drivers are not us, but set of instructions triggered by patterns that are played over and over and over again regardless of our own will by prehistoricOs can be very liberating. So what are these drivers. Here is a brief list from a book “A Guide To The Good Life” by William B. Irvine that describes them well:

Tuning In > Tuning Out

Many times we try to fill our life with acitivities in order to forget about our deamons. We do not want to pause and be with ourself. Thats scary for many people. Busyness keeps us away from the deamons. We are busy with work, busy with study, budy at the gym, busy with planning our holiday. Busy, busy, busy. We continuously try to escape by keeping the mind busy so we dont have to face it. For many people meditation is difficult because they have to sit still. I get it, it is not for everyone, but the purpose is to stop and slow down. To be with ourself. Learning how to slow down can have many forms but is an essential key to rich living, key to not gettinng mad from all the busyness we impose to ourself. If you choose meditation, sitting still, fishing or chopping woods, do it for the right reasons, do it so you can tune in and become happier in the other domains of your life. Stop tuning out by busyness, find the right balance.

Misleading role models

The more I read about people that are considered conventionally successful in the eyes of society, the more I am realising how misleading this following has been. No this is not a rant or a complaint, but simple review of what we as a society consider to be success and we blindly follow it. We follow only the book covers, the shiny shallow outside view but we are completely missing the point of living which is “to learn, to be loved – to be happy”. Shouldn’t we change this perception of only judging the book by the cover, and start asking if inside these people we consider “successful” are truly happy? Shouldn’t the way of living a rich happy life be the barometer of success? Shouldn’t we glorify those that found internal peace, that found enough, that found their craft that brings them endless joy? Look at figures like Michale Jordan, Tiger Woods or Bilzerian type of billionaires. Figures that we glorify, yet deep down they are insecure, hurt and unhappy. Don’t get me wrong, Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan have both accomplished tremendous achievements in their respected field, but the real questions is: are they happy and was it all worth it? I hope that one day we will have more role models, that have depth and wisdom about how to live truly rich and happy life and we will be able to follow these role models as true role models. Role models we can truly learn from about the way how to live life. True role models.

Enough

I love the short story from the book Stillness is the key:

“Standing in the palatial second home of some boring billionaire, Vonegut began to needle his friend. “Joe”, he said, “how does it feel that our host only yesterday may have made more money than your novel has earned in its entire history?”

“I’ve got something he can never have,” Joe replied

“And what on earth could that be?” Vonnegut asked

“The knowledge that I have got enough”.
